Iran slams IAEA report as “politically motivated”
Iran’s Foreign Ministry has strongly criticised the latest report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), calling it “politically motivated” and lodging an official protest over its contents.
Tehran warned it would take “appropriate measures” if the board proceeds with action against the country, but did not provide specifics, Caliber.Az reports via Israeli media.
According to a confidential and detailed report by the United Nations' nuclear watchdog, Iran carried out secret nuclear work involving undeclared nuclear material at three locations that have long drawn international concern.
The "comprehensive" report from the IAEA, which was commissioned by its 35-nation Board of Governors in November, could set the stage for new diplomatic friction. The findings open the door for the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Germany to push for a formal declaration that Iran has violated its nuclear non-proliferation obligations.
Such a move would likely trigger a sharp response from Tehran and risks further undermining already fragile nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States. Diplomats say the four Western nations are preparing to submit a draft resolution to the IAEA Board at its next meeting scheduled for the week of June 9. If passed, it would be the first time in nearly 20 years that Iran is officially declared non-compliant with its nuclear commitments.
Iran, which has openly called for Israel’s destruction, insists its nuclear programme is intended solely for peaceful purposes. It has consistently denied accusations by Western powers that it is pursuing nuclear weapons. However, the IAEA report notes that Iran continues to enrich uranium to levels that have no civilian purpose and are only suitable for use in nuclear weapons.
