Iran warns of global trade risks after new US sanctions
Esmaeil Baghaei, Iranian Foreign Ministry, has responded to the new U.S. sanctions against Iran by raising trade tariffs for Iran’s economic partners.
“The people of Iran have been subjected to sanctions and harsh, illegal economic pressure from the United States and some of its allies under various pretexts for more than 75 years. This reflects a deeply rooted hostility toward Iran within the U.S. decision-making system,” Baghaei said in a statement published by the Foreign Ministry on Telegram, per Caliber.Az.
Pointing to the illegal and inhumane nature of U.S. economic sanctions against Iran, as well as their clear contradiction with the fundamental principles and norms of the UN Charter and international law, including the principles of free international trade between states, the Foreign Ministry official emphasised.
“The U.S. economic sanctions, by violating the fundamental rights of every Iranian citizen, constitute a crime against humanity, and those imposing sanctions must be held accountable for the consequences of these crimes,” Baghaei said.
He also warned of the dangerous consequences of the U.S.’s “unilateral punitive” actions for the international trade system and highlighted the responsibility of the United Nations and all its bodies, including the Secretary-General, to fulfil their duties in protecting the rule of law at the international level.
“Without a doubt, the people of Iran, relying on their capabilities and invaluable experience in resisting unjust pressure, will continue the path of progress and development of the country with determination,” he added.
