Iranian MFA spokesperson: Pakistan sole mediator in talks with US
Iran has said that Pakistan is currently the only country officially mediating in its diplomatic engagement with the United States.
Speaking to the media, Esmaeil Baqaei, a spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, said that while other countries remain in contact and are holding consultations, Pakistan is the sole formal intermediary in the negotiation process, Caliber.Az reports per Iranian media.
“The effectiveness of mediation depends on the parties’ fulfilment of their obligations,” he was quoted as saying.
Baqaei also stressed that Iran is not in conflict with its neighbouring countries, describing Tehran’s recent actions as “legitimate self-defence” in response to what he called military aggression by the United States and Israel. He warned, however, that allowing regional territory to be used for attacks against neighbouring states would have serious consequences.
In addition, the spokesperson said that normal shipping operations in the Strait of Hormuz cannot yet resume. He cited continued ceasefire violations and what he described as threats to Iranian ports and vessels, adding that the security situation remains unstable.
According to Baqaei, the ongoing risks have discouraged insurers and cargo operators, making unilateral efforts to restore maritime traffic unfeasible.
