Kremlin warns of сountermeasures over Baltic nuclear plans
The Kremlin warned that Russia would take countermeasures if nuclear weapons were deployed in the Baltic states, arguing that such a move would heighten, rather than reduce, regional security risks.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a briefing that proposals by Baltic countries, including Lithuania, to host nuclear weapons would not enhance their safety.
“Contrary to the expectations of these countries that are making such a decision, this will not add to their security,” he said, referring to Vilnius’ decision to initiate procedures that could allow the deployment. “On the contrary, it will significantly increase the level of danger for them, because countermeasures will be taken against such countries so that we can ensure our interests.”
Peskov also commented on recent Ukrainian drone strikes targeting tankers, describing them as unlawful actions against international energy infrastructure. He added that Moscow has repeatedly raised concerns with Ankara over what it says are continued attempts by Kyiv to attack infrastructure linked to Russian gas exports.
