Moldova minister calls Azerbaijan key pillar of Europe’s energy security
Moldova’s Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu has said Azerbaijan plays a “decisive role” in strengthening Europe’s energy security, as Chisinau accelerates efforts to reduce external dependence and align more closely with the EU energy market.
Speaking after returning from a visit to Azerbaijan, Junghietu said Moldova is undergoing a “major transformation” aimed at integrating into the European energy system, with Azerbaijan emerging as a central supplier within that framework, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
“Moldova is making a serious shift towards the European energy market. Within this market, Azerbaijan is a key source,” he said, adding that discussions during a recent forum focused on energy exchange in the Black Sea region.
During the visit, Junghietu held talks with Azerbaijan’s Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov and representatives of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR). The meetings centred on expanding economic and energy cooperation, including potential collaboration in renewable energy and broader strategic regional projects.
According to the minister, the two sides also reviewed prospects for supplying oil products and natural gas to Moldova under competitive conditions, alongside opportunities for increased Azerbaijani investment in Moldova’s energy sector.
Particular emphasis was placed on green energy initiatives, including the Azerbaijan–Georgia–Romania–Hungary Green Energy Corridor, designed to transport electricity generated from renewable sources to European markets.
