Pakistan to present innovative technology centre at COP29 Pioneering green initiatives

25 October 2024 17:45

At the inauguration of the Wildlife Art exhibition in Islamabad, Romina Khurshid Alam, Advisor to Pakistan's Prime Minister on Climate Change, highlighted a significant development in the country’s climate strategy.

She announced that Pakistan will unveil a groundbreaking initiative at the upcoming COP29 in Baku: the Green Technology Centre, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

This centre is poised to be a major innovation aimed at bolstering Pakistan's green energy infrastructure and attracting foreign investment.

Khurshid Alam emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change, noting that its impacts are becoming increasingly severe and frequent.

She remarked on the potential of fine arts to raise awareness and draw attention to these pressing issues, stating, "The power of fine arts and painting can be utilized... to create awareness among political leaders and the public."

Additionally, she urged stakeholders and business representatives to support the government’s initiative to stimulate investment in green energy technologies.

“Having green energy technology is our advantage. Our main task is to make our country a leader in this field,” she asserted, stressing the importance of collaboration in promoting innovation and sustainability for future generations.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will take place in Azerbaijan this November. This decision was made during the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023. Baku is expected to welcome approximately 70,000 to 80,000 international attendees over the two-week event.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The COP, or “Conference of the Parties,” is the highest decision-making body responsible for overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC, which has 198 member states. Unless otherwise decided, the COP convenes annually; the first COP was held in Berlin in March 1995, with its secretariat based in Bonn.
