Pakistani PM calls for global action to combat Islamophobia
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif marked the International Day to Combat Islamophobia by calling for urgent global action to address the rising tide of discrimination and violence against Muslims worldwide.
In his statement, Sharif emphasized that Islamophobia poses a significant threat to global peace and stability, and that decisive policies and legislative measures are necessary to combat it, Caliber.Az reports per Pakistani media.
Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s pivotal role in the United Nations' recognition of this important day and reiterated the country's commitment to pushing for meaningful actions to combat Islamophobia. While acknowledging international efforts, including the implementation of bans on the desecration of the Quran, he stressed that more must be done to protect Muslims from hate crimes and to safeguard their religious symbols.
He underscored that disrespecting any faith under the guise of free speech is unacceptable, urging the global community to take a firm stance against such acts of intolerance. “Respecting all religions is essential for peace and coexistence,” Sharif said, calling for stronger protections and policies that prevent hate crimes against Muslims and defend their right to practice their religion freely.
In his remarks, Sharif also welcomed the United Nations' decision to appoint a Special Envoy to address Islamophobia, expressing hope that this would lead to stronger protections for Muslims worldwide. He emphasized the need for international cooperation to prevent attacks on mosques and other religious sites, as well as to ensure the safety and security of Muslim communities globally.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister reaffirmed the nation’s unwavering dedication to promoting interfaith harmony and ensuring that all communities, regardless of faith, are able to practice their beliefs without fear.
