Party leader on Paris's oppression: France regards Corsica as its colony VIDEO

02 April 2024 12:10

The CBC TV channel interviewed Eric Simone, the founder of the Corsican party Nazione, who criticized the policy of the French government towards the people of Corsica.

Simone claimed that since the French army occupied Corsica in 1769, there has been a struggle to recognize the national rights of the Corsicans, which the French government refuses to do.

Simone stated that the French authorities have initiated a series of false discussions that are proclaimed as a historical process, but in reality, they are not. The Corsican independence movement continues to face repression, and there has been no improvement in the situation.

He insisted on the recognition of the rights of the Corsican people and their right to control their destiny based on international law and the UN charter. However, the French state denies this right and does not acknowledge Corsica as a separate entity and considers it a colony. Corsicans are protesting against the arrests of activists, and they demand that power be transferred from the centre to the Corsicans, especially in tax and social matters, so that these crucial issues are adapted to their region. Additionally, they also demand the recognition of their language status as an official language.

Simone believes that regaining sovereignty and independence, lost due to the military annexation by the French army, requires the recognition of Corsica as a nation. The French constitution does not recognize the Corsican nation, and Paris disregards the rights of the Corsicans. Despite false discussions and empty promises, the Corsicans will continue their struggle. Simone emphasized that France is not a country that can set an example of respect for human rights.
