Presidential elections in Türkiye may be postponed due to earthquake disaster
The Turkish authorities may agree to postpone the presidential and parliamentary elections to be held in May this year.
According to Habertürk columnist Fatih Altayli, the ruling Justice and Development Party is taking this issue seriously amidst the large-scale earthquake consequences.
“A decision will be made on the elections. Then the High Electoral Commission will state that it has become virtually impossible to hold elections in full in four regions and partially in six regions (due to the consequences of earthquakes), and will ask to postpone the elections,” Altayli wrote.
He added that the vote may eventually be postponed for at least six months, and in the worst case for a whole year. He also said that for this, the authorities will use one of the old decisions of the Constitutional Court in a similar situation.
