Pro-Armenian member of Bundestag voices support for Georgian opposition Amid protests in Tbilisi
Another protest action against the recently adopted law "On Transparency of Foreign Influence" will be held in Tbilisi on May 15, Interfax reports.
Organized by the youth movement “Dafioni,” the demonstration saw protesters blocking automobile traffic on Rustaveli Avenue near the Parliament building. The protest, which began in the evening, continued through the night, with participants dispersing only in the early hours of the morning. Despite police efforts to curb the illegal actions and detain several individuals, authorities eventually retreated under the pressure of the crowd.
For the first time since the protests began on April 15, opposition leaders addressed the crowd, calling for the resignation of the current government and the formation of a coalition cabinet of ministers. However, their appeals were met with tepid enthusiasm from the predominantly student audience, who disrupted the speeches with green laser pointers.
In contrast, international support for the protesters was warmly received. The chairmen of the parliamentary foreign affairs committees from Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania, and Finland, who arrived in Georgia without an official invitation, were greeted with applause.
Michael Roth, the chairman of the Bundestag's foreign affairs committee, delivered a speech that resonated strongly with the protesters. "Today, Tbilisi is a real capital of Europe," Roth declared. "We are proud of you. Your battle is our battle," he added, urging the Georgian authorities to retract the controversial law.
Roth has repeatedly made provocative remarks against Azerbaijan, reflecting his Armenianophile stance.
