Russia ranks world’s least safe country in 2025 GPI ranking shows
Russia has been ranked the least safe country in the world, taking 163rd place in the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI) published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).
The Global Peace Index, compiled annually since 2007, is a leading measure of a country’s peacefulness, covering 163 nations that account for 99.7% of the world’s population. It evaluates 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators sourced from authoritative organisations.
The index assesses peace across three dimensions: societal safety and security, the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflicts, and the degree of militarisation.
The report also analyses current conflicts, hotspots of escalation, risk assessments, economic impacts of violence, and the role of positive peace in strengthening resilience.
Russia scored 3.441 points, a decline of 2 points from last year, followed closely by Ukraine at 3.434 (-3). The top five least safe countries also include Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Yemen.
The safest countries were Ireland, Iceland, New Zealand, Australia, and Switzerland.
