Roketsan, a Turkish defence company, has announced the successful completion of field tests for its MZK105 turret system, marking a significant advancement in tank modernization efforts.
The MZK105 turret system is poised to serve as the foundation for a heavier version armed with Soviet-caliber guns, aiming to enhance firepower and protection for tanks belonging to the M60, Leopard 1, and T-72 families.
Initially showcased at the beginning of last year, the MZK105 underwent its first field tests in June 2023, mounted on the chassis of the M60A3 tank, as reported by Defence24.
Equipped with a 105mm cannon, the MZK105 is designed to potentially accommodate a 125mm gun akin to the Soviet model, which utilizes separate-loading rounds. This adaptation, designated as the MZK125, incorporates an automatic loader, enabling a reduction in crew size by one member.
Primarily aimed at modernizing Turkish M60 tanks and enhancing foreign T-72 fleets, the MZK turret features remote sensing modules intended to counter anti-tank-guided missiles with tandem cumulative warheads. However, some scepticism surrounds its efficacy against contemporary ATGMs like the Russian 9M133 Kornet.
The turret's design integrates additional protective measures, including remote sensing coverage atop the turret to defend against loitering munitions or FPV drones. It also features a modern fire control system and laser irradiation warning system.
The Turkish army's procurement plans for the modernized M60A3 remain undisclosed. With over 600 original M60A3 tanks and 166 upgraded to the M60T standard, alongside approximately 350 M48A5T2 units, Türkiye aims to potentially replace older models with new Altay tanks in the near future.
Roketsan eyes exporting the turret system to existing M60 users, including Egypt, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Morocco, while anticipating significant interest in the T-72 modernization package (MZK125) given the widespread usage of Soviet vehicles globally.
