Türkiye's ASELSAN unveils KALKAN-II aerial tracking equipment

21 December 2023 11:08

Turkish defence company ASELSAN has unveiled the KALKAN-II airborne search and tracking radar system.

KALKAN (shield) is a three-dimensional radar system for short- and medium-range air defence, Caliber.Az reports, citing the X page of SavunmaSanayiST.com.

Thanks to its electronic elevation angle rotation and multiple parallel reception channels, the radar enables rapid and accurate detection and tracking of low-flying air targets in all three coordinates, thus providing airborne situational awareness at command posts.

The airborne radar can accurately track multiple targets and add classification and identification information to the target. The system uses a phased array antenna with multiple parallel receive patterns and is optimised for both tracks during scanning and broadcasting. It is designed as a compact and easy-to-maintain radar mounted on a small single-axle trailer that can be moved by a tactical tow vehicle.

It also transmits radar data and jamming conditions by radio to command posts and receives control commands from there. KALKAN is currently the primary mobile radar sensor used in the Hava Savunma Erken İkaz Komuta Kontrol Sistemi (HERİKKS) early warning and air defence system and the Turkish Air Force's medium-range air defence system.

Important features: X-band solid-state transmission system; phased array antenna; multi-beam antenna; pulse compression; position determination in three coordinates (3D radar); simultaneous tracking of multiple airborne; tracking and search (TAS) architecture; automatic target classification; radar requester (identification device); remote control from command post.
