Türkiye’s Sakarya field delivers billions in gas savings, cuts import dependence
Natural gas production from Türkiye’s Black Sea Sakarya field has enabled the country to save around $2 billion in gas imports, according to AZERTAC.
The discovery of Türkiye’s largest-ever offshore gas field was announced in July 2020, with first deliveries to the national grid beginning in September 2023.
By the end of 2023, production from the Sakarya field reached 337 million cubic metres. Output increased to 1.66 billion cubic metres in 2024, 3 billion cubic metres last year, and a further 1 billion cubic metres between January and May this year.
Total reserves of the Sakarya field are estimated at 785 billion cubic metres, valued at approximately $250 billion.
Since the start of operations, Türkiye has produced around 6 billion cubic metres of domestic gas from the field, with a market value of about $2 billion.
Officials say this has contributed to a gradual reduction in the country’s reliance on imported energy.
According to official data, Türkiye spent $21.2 billion on natural gas imports last year, with 43% coming from Russia, 20% from the United States, 12% from Azerbaijan, 11% from Iran, 7% from Algeria, and 7% from other sources.
