UN adopts resolution on hostage release at Azerbaijan’s initiative

22 March 2025 09:25

A resolution titled "Release of Women and Children Taken Hostage, Including Those Subsequently Imprisoned, in Armed Conflicts" was adopted on March 21 at the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), following the initiative of Azerbaijan.

Proposed biennially since 1994, the resolution draws attention to the plight of women and children in armed conflicts, with particular focus on the issue of hostages, Caliber.Az reports, citing Azerbaijan's Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

The resolution underscores that such actions are inherently illegal and unjustifiable. The document strongly condemns all acts of violence against civilians in violation of international humanitarian law during armed conflicts and calls for effective response measures, particularly the immediate release of women and children held hostage.

In addition, the resolution urges all parties involved in armed conflicts to fully comply with international humanitarian law and take necessary measures to protect civilian populations. It also calls on states to urgently determine the fate and whereabouts of women and children who are held hostage. Emphasizing the importance of strengthening accountability, the resolution reminds all states of their legal duty under international law to investigate, prosecute, or hold accountable individuals found guilty of war crimes.

Ultimately, the resolution aims to foster international cooperation, safeguard the safety and dignity of hostages, and improve mechanisms for their release, rehabilitation, and reintegration into society. The UN Secretary-General is expected to present a detailed report on the implementation of this resolution at the 71st session of the Commission on the Status of Women.
