UN chief calls for rapid transition to sustainable energy systems
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) remains committed to working with governments to save lives, protect people, and strengthen economies, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a video address to participants of an event marking World Environment Day, held in Azerbaijan in partnership with UNEP.
He stressed the urgent need to significantly reduce carbon emissions and accelerate the global transition to renewable energy sources, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
“We must implement more sustainable and cheaper energy solutions and ensure genuine energy security,” Guterres said.
“I want to emphasize that the fastest and most cost-effective way to achieve this goal is already known, and effective solutions exist. It is important to protect forests, land, and oceans, and to help communities adapt to climate change, which is becoming increasingly destructive each year,” he added.
The Secretary-General underlined that addressing climate change requires coordinated international action and the adoption of proven, practical solutions already available.
