UN optimistic about peace process between Azerbaijan, Armenia
The United Nations has expressed hope that the ongoing peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan will yield positive results, benefiting the entire region.
This sentiment was conveyed by the official representative of the UN Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric during a briefing, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
"We very much hope that the process of normalisation [of relations] will bear fruit. I believe that the normalisation of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the settlement of a number of bilateral issues will have an extremely positive impact not only on these countries, but also on the region as a whole," Dujarric stated.
His comments come in the wake of a meeting between Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov in Washington on July 10.
The meeting, initiated and facilitated by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, took place on the margins of the NATO Summit commemorating its 75th anniversary.
According to the Armenian Foreign Ministry's press service, the talks highlighted the progress made by both Yerevan and Baku towards establishing peace and normalising interstate relations. The foreign ministers agreed to continue working towards a comprehensive peace agreement.
