Azerbaijan discusses renewable energy cooperation with Belgian delegation

13 March 2026 17:50

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Energy, Parviz Shahbazov, held talks with a Belgian delegation led by former Prime Minister Yves Leterme to explore cooperation opportunities in renewable energy development and electricity exports, the ministry said.

The meeting was attended by representatives of W-Kracht, a Belgian company specialising in the development of onshore wind energy projects. Discussions focused on potential collaboration in implementing renewable energy projects in Azerbaijan and exporting electricity generated from these sources, Caliber.Az reports via the ministry.

During the talks, Azerbaijani officials emphasized the country’s role in promoting stability and constructive cooperation in the region. They highlighted Azerbaijan’s energy policy, particularly its efforts to expand renewable energy production and develop international energy corridors, which have drawn increasing interest from international partners.

According to the ministry, Azerbaijan is currently implementing 11 power plant projects based on wind and solar energy. A dedicated grid study is also underway to assess the electricity network’s capacity to integrate new generation facilities.

Officials also outlined plans to establish data centers that are expected to increase domestic electricity demand, as well as infrastructure initiatives aimed at exporting electricity to Europe. Azerbaijan is planning to create an electricity interconnection with Eastern Europe starting from 2032.

In this context, the country is seeking cooperation with European companies interested in participating in power generation projects and later trading electricity in Eastern European markets.

Both sides agreed to continue dialogue on potential partnerships in the renewable energy sector.
