Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and China unveil joint cargo terminal venture Transforming regional connectivity
Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and China have formed a joint venture to construct a new intermodal cargo terminal at the Baku Port.
The agreement was signed by Taleh Ziyadov, CEO of Baku International Sea Trade Port CJSC; Nurlan Sauranbayev, Chairman of the Board of Kazakhstan Railways JSC; and Yuan Xiaojun, CEO of Xi'an Free Trade Port Construction and Operation Co Ltd, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
The project will involve developing infrastructure for the Intermodal Cargo Terminal on a 40-hectare area at Baku Port, located in the village of Alyat.
Baku Port, a crucial component of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, spans 400 hectares and is situated 70 kilometres from Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku. The port features 13 berths capable of accommodating Ro-Ro vessels, ferries, and general cargo operations.
The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, which includes Baku Port, serves as a vital link between Europe and Asia, connecting China and Central Asia with Europe through Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye. The enhancement of Baku port’s infrastructure, including the construction of a new container terminal, is expected to boost cargo throughput and accelerate delivery times along this significant trade corridor.
Container transportation is globally recognized for its efficiency and capacity to handle large volumes of goods. The new terminal in Baku aims to increase container traffic, positively impacting the regional economy and making the area more attractive to international logistics companies.
The construction of the terminal will also strengthen trade relations among regional countries. Improved transport infrastructure will reduce cargo transit time and costs, enhancing the region's competitiveness on the global stage.
Overall, the establishment of the new container terminal at Baku port marks a strategically important advancement in developing the region’s transport network and fostering international trade relations. As the project unfolds, a substantial increase in transport volumes and economic improvements across the region are anticipated, underscoring the significance of this ambitious venture.
