Azerbaijan's smal HPPs generate hundreds of millions of energy in Karabakh
In 2020-2023, a total of 110 million kWh of electricity was produced at Azerenerji JSC’s 11 reconstructed and rehabilitated small hydroelectric power plants (SHPPs) in the territories liberated from occupation.
This was reported during a media tour organised by the joint-stock company in Kalbajar, Report informs.
Notably, 11 SHPPs with a total capacity of 53 megawatts, located mainly on rivers in Kalbajar and Lachin districts, are 2 times more productive than 13 SHPPs with a total capacity of 74 megawatts in other parts of the country.
To recap, in accordance with the instruction of the Azerbaijani president on the transformation of the territories liberated from occupation into a "green energy zone" after the Victory in the Patriotic War, small hydroelectric power plants Gamishli, Meydan, Gulabird, Sugovushan-1, Sugovushan-2 and Kalbajar-1 and others with a total capacity of 20 megawatts were built and commissioned.
This way, the “Kalbajar-1” HPP is connected to the overall energy system of Azerbaijan. The station is digitally operated, has an intelligent management system enabling operational monitoring and analysis, can be controlled and managed from Kalbajar, as well as from the Main Control Centre in Baku. The remote-controlled HPP operates almost without staff. The control system of the stations is fully automated and digitised with special software, which leads to a further reduction in the cost of electricity generated.
The “Gamishli” Small Hydroelectric Power Station, which had been dismantled and destroyed by Armenians leaving Kalbajar, was completely reconstructed by “Azerenergy”. The main generator hall was built for the 6.3 MW “Gamishli” Small Hydroelectric Power Station.
The 110 kW substation was constructed at the “Gamishli” station, which is consisted of two hydro turbine units. A SCADA control system was installed at the station.
The “Gamishli” Small Hydroelectric Power Station has the 18.5 million kWh capacity.
The 3.4 MW “Meydan” station, which had been destroyed by Armenians, was completely reconstructed up to modern and digital standards by “Azerenergy”. The SCADA control system was installed with the station integrated into the power grid. The “Meydan” Small Hydroelectric Power Station has a capacity of 10 million kWh.
Notably, Azerbaijan’s Energy Ministry is studying the possibility of restoring over 50 small hydroelectric power plants in the liberated territories.
