Azerbaijan updates internal troops law to strengthen security
The Milli Majlis (Parliament) has officially adopted the draft law “On the Internal Troops of the Republic of Azerbaijan” in its final reading.
The draft law was discussed during today’s plenary session of parliament. It establishes the roles, rights, and responsibilities of the internal troops in safeguarding Azerbaijan’s constitutional order, sovereignty, public order, and overall public safety. The legislation also lays out the legal foundations for the management and operational oversight of these forces, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
The law delineates the key principles and operational directions of the internal troops, specifying their composition, duties, authorities, and rights. It includes detailed provisions regarding financial and logistical support, the conditions for using physical force, special equipment, firearms, military vehicles, and other specialized gear, as well as mechanisms for monitoring and controlling these resources.
Comprising six chapters and thirty articles, the document represents a comprehensive update to existing regulations. Currently, the legal status of Azerbaijan’s internal troops is defined by the Law “On the Status of Internal Troops,” which was adopted on February 8, 1994.
Parliamentarians emphasized that the new legislation is essential to enhance the country’s defence capabilities and maintain internal stability. The draft was prepared in accordance with the Constitutional Law “On Normative Legal Acts” and adheres to established legislative drafting standards.
Following thorough discussion, the draft law was put to a vote and approved in the third and final reading.
