Azerbaijani border guards tighten control over EU Mission in Armenia PHOTO
Azerbaijani border guards are closely overseeing the activities of the European Union Mission in Armenia (EUMA).
Thus, on February 10, European observers arrived in the area adjacent to Zangilan, and conducted an inspection of the surrounding area, using binoculars to survey territory, including that towards Azerbaijan, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
Movement of the observers, both on foot and by vehicle, was meticulously monitored and recorded by Azerbaijani border guards. The EU monitoring mission, which regularly conducts surveillance along the Azerbaijani-Armenian border, has been under scrutiny, with detailed reports and footage of its activities regularly published in Azerbaijani media outlets.
Additionally, footage of the mission’s activities released in areas near Azerbaijan’s borders, further highlighting the ongoing tensions in the region.
It is also worth noting that the EU’s border monitoring mission, which consists of 200 personnel, has had its mandate extended for an additional two years, now running until 19 February 2027.
Note that, European Union ambassadors in Brussels have approved the extension of the EU Mission in Armenia (EUMA) for an additional two years, ensuring the continued presence of European observers along Armenia’s border regions until February 19, 2027.
Armenian media sources report that the mission’s mandate will remain unchanged from its original two-year term. The team will consist of 165 foreign nationals and 44 Armenian personnel, with no changes to the composition or number of observers.
This decision is expected to receive formal approval from the EU member states' foreign ministers shortly, although it is considered a mere formality following the ambassadors' approval on January 29.
