Germany plans to send Patriot air defence system, 150 troops to Türkiye
Germany plans to deploy an additional Patriot air defence system to Türkiye starting at the end of June, along with 150 military personnel, German Ambassador to Türkiye Sibylle Katharina Sorg announced.
“In this way, the armed forces support [Türkiye] as an important NATO ally and make a valuable contribution to the air and missile defence of the alliance’s southeastern flank,” she said in a post on the social media platform X.

Germany’s role in NATO air and missile defence has a long-standing operational basis in Türkiye, especially through the Patriot system. NATO first deployed German (alongside US and Dutch) Patriot batteries to southern Türkiye in 2012–2013 to protect against potential spillover from the Syrian conflict, marking a coordinated alliance response to regional missile threats.
This mission later evolved into a rotating NATO framework known as Operation Active Fence, under which allied Patriot systems have been periodically deployed, withdrawn, and redeployed based on threat assessments and regional instability.
