Iranian foreign minister urges UN Security Council to delay sanctions vote
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to support a draft resolution postponing sanctions against Iran. The appeal comes ahead of a scheduled vote on the extension of Resolution 2231, which governs the UN’s approach to Iran’s nuclear program.
Araghchi published the statement on his social media account on X, urging Council members to prioritise diplomacy over confrontation, Caliber.Az reports.
“This afternoon, the UN Security Council will be voting on a draft resolution to extend Resolution 2231. It is a fleeting opportunity for the Council to say 'No' to confrontation and 'Yes' to cooperation, providing time and space for diplomacy,” Araghchi wrote.
The Iranian diplomat stressed that while Tehran has submitted multiple proposals to keep diplomatic channels open, the E3 (France, Germany, and the UK) has not reciprocated, and the United States has intensified its pressure.
“In the face of this apparent E3-U.S. policy of escalation, Iran urges Council members to act responsibly and stand on the right side of history by supporting diplomacy, justice and international law. Might must never be right,” he added.
