Is there criminal liability on second citizenship concealment in Azerbaijan? Lawyer clarifies

Information that criminal punishment is provided in Azerbaijan for those who accepted citizenship of another country but failed to notify the authorities of the Republic of Azerbaijan is spreading in social networks.

Lawyer Leyla Akbarova told Caliber.Az that until recently the law indeed contained such an article: a fine up to 5000 manats or community service was imposed for failure to provide information on citizenship acceptance of another country.

"In 2020 this article was removed from the Criminal Code. At the moment a citizen of Azerbaijan does not bear any criminal responsibility if he or she accepted citizenship of another country and did not notify Azerbaijan about it," Akbarova emphasized.
