Kazakhstan suspends flights over Iranian airspace amid safety threats

26 January 2026 19:44

The Civil Aviation Committee of Kazakhstan (CAA) has officially prohibited Kazakh airlines from operating flights over Iranian airspace, citing heightened safety risks, Kazakh media reports.

"Due to the increased threats to flight safety over Iranian territory, the CAA has banned Kazakh airlines from flying over, within, or near Iranian airspace until further notice. All flights are being rerouted to avoid the dangerous zone. The situation is under the control of the CAA, and further measures will be taken as the threat level changes," a statement by the CAA said.

The directive affects all carriers based in Kazakhstan, requiring them to adjust flight paths to circumvent the affected areas. Authorities emphasized that the situation is being closely monitored and that additional measures may be introduced depending on developments in the region.

On January 15, two major Kazakh airlines—Air Astana and FlyArystan—announced alterations to their flight schedules in response to the ban. The companies confirmed that all affected flights have been rerouted to ensure passenger safety.
