Kremlin: Israel's actions undermine Syria's stabilisation
Press secretary for the Russian president Dmitry Peskov has stated that Israel's actions in Syria are not contributing to the stabilisation of the situation in the country.
"Certainly, airstrikes and actions by [Israel] in the Golan Heights and the buffer zone are unlikely to contribute to stabilising the situation in destabilised Syria. We would like to see a swift stabilisation of the situation in the country, which would then allow for bringing the situation back to a legal framework," he said during a briefing, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
Peskov noted that the Kremlin is closely monitoring the developments in Syria at the moment. Relations are being maintained with those who are currently controlling the situation in the country following Bashar al-Assad's departure from the presidency.
"Of course, we are carefully tracking everything happening in Syria and maintaining contact with those who are currently in control of the situation. This is essential because we have military bases and diplomatic missions in the country," he said.
Peskov emphasised that the security of Russian assets in Syria is of utmost importance and remains a top priority.
"We will continue monitoring the situation very carefully, of course, based on the current realities," he added.
In late November, armed opposition groups launched a large-scale offensive against Syrian army positions. On December 8, they entered Damascus, prompting government forces to withdraw from the city. Bashar al-Assad resigned from the presidency and left the country. On December 8, a Kremlin source said that Assad, along with his family, arrived in Moscow, and Russia, on humanitarian grounds, granted them asylum.
