Media: Türkiye emerges as top importer of Azerbaijani electricity

07 June 2025 15:38

Türkiye has become the leading importer of electricity from Azerbaijan, and plans are underway to supply solar energy generated in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR) to Türkiye’s national power distribution network, according to a report by the Turkish daily Akşam published on June 7.

The article, quoted by local media, highlights that the planned integration of Nakhchivan’s renewable energy into Türkiye’s grid will support Ankara’s broader objective of establishing the country as a key regional energy hub, per Caliber.Az.

This move aligns with Azerbaijan’s expanding strategy to boost exports of “green” energy while continuing to meet domestic electricity demand.

Akşam draws attention to Baku’s increasing investments in renewable energy sources (RES), particularly solar and wind, as a key part of its energy diversification policy. The newspaper notes that Azerbaijan aims not only to supply electricity to neighbouring countries but also to strengthen its role as a green energy exporter to Europe.

“As part of this strategy, Türkiye will not only continue purchasing electricity from Azerbaijan but will also act as a transit corridor. Nakhchivan holds a special role in this initiative,” the article states.

The publication quotes Azerbaijan’s Deputy Energy Minister Elnur Soltanov, who confirmed that Türkiye has recently become the largest buyer of Azerbaijani electricity. He detailed ongoing plans to broaden electricity export routes, including both the expansion of the power transmission infrastructure through Georgia and the development of the corridor through Nakhchivan.

“This involves not only electricity produced in Nakhchivan itself but also the transmission of electricity from other regions of Azerbaijan through NAR,” Soltanov explained.

He further emphasised the renewable energy potential of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, estimating its solar and wind energy capacity at around 6 gigawatts.

“Part of this capacity will be available for export to Türkiye,” Soltanov added, underlining the strategic significance of Nakhchivan in Azerbaijan’s green energy roadmap.
