Nizami Ganjavi Centre co-chair sounds alarm on escalating carbon emissions We must act now to save humanity
Ismail Serageldin, co-chair of the Nizami Ganjavi International Centre, addressed the critical issue of global warming at the High-Level Dialogue: Advancing Climate Transparency through Universal Participation in the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) held in Baku on September 3.
Serageldin highlighted a troubling increase in carbon dioxide emissions, which have surged more than 1.5 times over the past three decades, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
He noted that while humanity emitted 33 billion tons of carbon dioxide annually 30 years ago, this figure has now escalated to 54 billion tons per year. The concentration of this greenhouse gas has reached a critical threshold in 2024. Additionally, methane and nitrous oxide levels are at their highest in 800,000 years.
Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, Serageldin called for immediate climate action to mitigate the environmental damage caused by climate change.
"With Azerbaijan's determination and our collective commitment, we have a chance to avert a catastrophic outcome for humanity," he added.
