Three years pass since Azerbaijan's regaining of full control over border with Iran

22 October 2023 09:28

Today marks three years since the liberation of a territory of Azerbaijan, along which a 132-kilometre section of the state border with Iran, occupied by the armed forces of Armenia, passed.

On 22 October 2020, the village of Aghband in Zangilan district was liberated and thus Azerbaijan regained full control over the entire border area with Iran along the Araz River, Caliber.Az reports.

Azerbaijan's President, Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ilham Aliyev conveyed this good news to the Azerbaijani people. The head of state congratulated the peoples of the two countries on this event, which became possible after the liberation of the Aghband village.

The Azerbaijani military, who liberated Aghband and the self-named border outpost from Armenian occupation, reported this to Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev.

On the same day, along with the village of Aghband, the villages of Kollukyshlag, Malatkeshin, Kand Zangilan, Genlik, Veligulubayli, Garadere, Chopedere, Tatar, Tiri, Amirkhanly, Gargulu, Bartaz, Dallekli of the Zangilan region, the villages of Mollavali, Yukhari Rafidinli, Ashaghi Rafidinli of Fuzuli and Sirik, Shikhlar, Mastabayli, Darzili of Jabrayil districts.

On the instructions of the President, the State Border Service, in the shortest possible time, created all the necessary infrastructure on the liberated part of the Azerbaijani-Iranian border to ensure its protection. The activities of border outposts were restored here.

In parallel with the operation to clear the territory of mines after liberation from occupation, work is being carried out in the village to restore the infrastructure.

Currently, the construction of the Horadiz-Jabrayil-Zangilan-Agband highway, which is of great importance for Azerbaijan, continues. The highway passes through the liberated territory of the Fuzuli, Jabrayil and Zangilan regions. The foundation of the road with a total length of 123.8 km was laid on April 26, 2021, during the visit of President Ilham Aliyev, First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva and their daughter Leyla Aliyeva to the Jabrayil and Zangilan regions.

At the same time, construction of the Horadiz-Aghband railway line continues. The Horadiz-Aghband railway line, the construction of which was launched by the President of the country in February 2021, has an axial length of 110.4 km. Construction work is carried out in 3 stages. Phase I is 30 km covering Horadiz, Marjanli, and Mahmudlu stations, Phase II is 55 km covering Sultanli, Gumlag, Hakari and Minjivan stations and Phase III is 25.4 km starting from Minjivan including Bartaz and Aghband stations.

The village of Aghband belongs to the rural administrative-territorial district of Vejnali, Zangilan region. It was occupied by the Armenian armed forces in 1993. The village is located on the banks of the Araz River at the foot of the mountain of the same name. Actually, the name of the settlement was taken from this mountain.
