UN calls for increased global investment in AI at XII Global Baku Forum
On the final day of the XII Global Baku Forum in Azerbaijan, the United Nations Chief Information Technology Officer, Bernardo Mariano, urged governments worldwide to boost investment in artificial intelligence (AI) development.
Mariano's remarks came as part of a panel discussion focused on "New Technologies for a New World", Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Mariano highlighted the significant progress AI has made, noting that after decades of research, technologies like ChatGPT have emerged, proving that AI is now capable of addressing complex societal issues. He stated, “The public sector must be ready for the future, but along with the opportunities AI brings, there are challenges. The UN is working to create a global digital agreement to address these.”
Emphasizing AI’s far-reaching impact, Mariano stressed the importance of communicating its significance to global audiences. “We need to communicate its importance to everyone,” he said. “Open source is the surest path to digital transformation. In AI, data, computing power, and algorithms are key. It is critical how much countries invest in these three areas.”
The forum, which kicked off on March 13, is taking place in Azerbaijan’s capital and has brought together global leaders, experts, and policymakers to discuss a range of issues affecting the future of global governance. The overarching theme of this year’s forum is “Rethinking the World Order: Turning Challenges into Opportunities.” As in past years, the forum has gathered over 400 influential figures, including heads of state, prime ministers, and representatives from international organizations.
In addition to AI, discussions have covered topics such as multilateral diplomacy, the evolving multipolar world order, post-conflict reconstruction, and the role of middle powers in shaping global governance. The forum aims to address contemporary global challenges and encourage collaboration among nations in navigating an increasingly complex world.
The final day’s discussions will continue to explore how emerging technologies, such as AI, can play a central role in shaping future policies and solutions for global issues.
