Associate professor: Azerbaijan accelerates archaeological resurgence in Karabakh, East Zangezur PHOTO
Farhad Guliyev, Director of the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology and Associate Professor of History, stated that their research over the past two years has mainly focused on the archaeological heritage of the liberated regions of Karabakh and East Zangezur.
"We are expanding our research activities in this region, as we were cut off from the archaeological sites in these territories for the last 30 years," Guliyev explained, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
According to Guliyev, all the monuments in these areas have been destroyed.
He emphasized that monuments reflecting primarily Islamic culture were deliberately targeted and destroyed.
"We are resuming the study of Karabakh and East Zangezur. Two years ago, there were just one or two expeditions in Karabakh, but now more than 10 of our expeditions are active there. Naturally, our expeditions cover all regions," he stated.
Commenting further, Associate Professor added that there are several additional topics that are important and fascinating for the history of Azerbaijan.
"For example, we are considering increasing the number of expeditions dedicated to urban sites that reflect Islamic culture, the study of medieval Azerbaijani cities, and ancient burial mounds," Guliyev stated.
