Azerbaijan achieves rapid progress on Aghdam-Asgaran-Khojali-Khankendi highway reconstruction
The reconstruction of the Aghdam-Asgaran-Khojali-Khankendi highway is advancing swiftly.
Mammad Mammadov, a representative from the State Road Agency of Azerbaijan, reported that the highway spans 33.6 kilometres, starting from the 40th kilometre of the Barda-Aghdam route, Caliber.Az reports citing local media.
“In line with the development plan for Karabakh, the highway is being constructed according to the first and second technical categories. A 12-kilometre section will be upgraded to meet second-category standards, featuring a 15-metre-wide earth bed, two lanes, and a 7.5-metre-wide carriageway,” Mammadov explained.
He also noted that a 21.6-kilometre segment of the highway is being reconstructed to first-category specifications.
“This section will have an earth bed width of 26.5 meters, a 15-meter-wide carriageway, and four traffic lanes — two in each direction. The project includes the construction of various culverts, two crossings, and five bridges along the route.”
Travellers heading to Khankendi, Shusha, and Lachin from the Barda direction will be able to use this ring road, allowing them to bypass Aghdam entirely. This new route will enhance transportation efficiency and significantly boost agricultural and tourism development in the region.
The Azerbaijani government is deeply committed to restoring lands liberated from occupation, with road construction being a key focus of these efforts.
