Deputy chief: UN backs Azerbaijan’s demining efforts in Karabakh
The United Nations is supporting Azerbaijan’s demining efforts in Karabakh as part of the broader post-conflict recovery and reconstruction process, according to UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.
Speaking at the closing press conference of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Mohammed addressed questions related to Karabakh and outlined the UN’s role in supporting Azerbaijan’s recovery strategy.
“Regarding the issue of Karabakh, this is a government program for reintegration and sustainable peace. The UN, in turn, supports the country in demining efforts. This is important work that will take a long time. But it is also part of the process of building trust and creating a safer environment for people as infrastructure is restored,” she said.
Her remarks highlighted that demining remains a central component of Azerbaijan’s post-conflict agenda, particularly in enabling the safe return of civilians and facilitating infrastructure rebuilding. Mohammed emphasised that the process will be lengthy but is essential not only for physical reconstruction, but also for fostering trust and stability in the region as part of a wider reintegration framework.
