Azerbaijan's grand road to Shusha nears completion VIDEO
The construction of Azerbaijan's new Ahmadbeyli-Fuzuli-Shusha high-speed motorway is progressing at a rapid pace. This project is part of the broader road infrastructure developments in Karabakh, which are expected to play a crucial role in revitalizing the socio-economic landscape of the regions liberated during the 2020 Patriotic War.
AzVirt, the company overseeing the construction, recently released footage showing that the ambitious project has entered its final stages, with much of the road already paved.
The motorway, first laid on January 14, 2021, during President Ilham Aliyev's visit to the Fuzuli district, stretches over 81.6 kilometres and will significantly enhance transportation between Ahmadbeyli, Fuzuli, and Shusha.
The road is primarily designed as a six-lane highway, with three lanes in each direction, spanning a total width of 37.7 to 29.5 meters. In the mountainous areas, the road will narrow to four lanes, with a total width of 21.5 meters. Along the route, 7 tunnels, 9 viaducts, and 30 subways are being constructed, further enhancing the functionality of the highway.
The Ahmadbeyli-Fuzuli-Shusha road connects with the M6 Hajigabul-Goradiz-Aghband-Zangezur corridor and passes through key regions liberated from Armenian occupation, including Fuzuli, Khojavand, Khojaly and Shusha districts. The full construction of this strategic motorway is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
The project has already garnered international recognition. Recently, the Ahmadbayli-Fuzuli-Shusha highway won first place globally in the "Innovative Construction Methodology" category at the "Regional Award for Outstanding Achievements in Europe and Central Asia – 2024," presented by the International Road Federation. The award ceremony took place in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, on September 26, with Azerbaijan represented by Emin Mammadzade, Head of the Foreign Investments Department of the State Agency of Azerbaijan Automobile Roads.
