Azerbaijan to prepare third National Decarbonisation Plan ahead of COP29
Azerbaijan's Renewable Energy Agency is currently working on the country's third national plan to reduce carbon emissions, said Rena Humbatova, Head of the Hydrogen and Green Technologies Department at the Agency.
According to Humbatova, Azerbaijan is now developing its third emissions reduction plan, Caliber.Az reports.
“The first plan aimed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 35%, the second by 40%. We have now reassessed our capabilities and are setting the goal of approaching a net zero emissions balance," Humbatova said during a panel discussion held on the fifth day of Baku Climate Week.
She added that Azerbaijan had studied the experiences of other countries and evaluated their strategies to determine the level of investment required for implementation.
Humbatova also noted that Azerbaijan's third emissions reduction plan is expected to be presented before COP29.
Notably, the inaugural Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW 2024) is being held from September 30 to October 4, 2024. It serves as a critical lead-up event to COP29, which will be held in Baku in November. Following New York Climate Week and the UN General Assembly, BCAW aims to maintain global momentum for climate action, focusing on the Roadmap to Mission 1.5°C and the COP29 Presidency's 14-point Action Agenda.
The event will gather stakeholders from various sectors, including policy, finance, academia, and civil society, to foster collaboration and innovation for Azerbaijan's green transition.
BCAW’s programme will blend climate solutions with Baku's cultural heritage, offering exhibitions, walking tours, and excursions that highlight the city’s environmental journey and history.
