As part of the Great Return programme, 15 internally displaced families, comprising a total of 46 people, have returned to Khanyurdu village in Azerbaijan’s Khojaly district.
The relocation is part of ongoing efforts to restore life in areas affected by the Karabakh conflict, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
With this stage completed, Khanyurdu will now be home to 69 families, amounting to 237 residents.
During the period of occupation, these families were temporarily accommodated in various locations across Azerbaijan, including dormitories, sanatoriums, and administrative buildings.
After the occupation ended in November 2020 and Azerbaijan regained its territorial integrity, the country initiated the Great Return programme—a comprehensive, government-led initiative aimed at enabling internally displaced persons (IDPs) to return safely and with dignity to their revitalised ancestral homelands.
The first phase, scheduled to be completed by 2026, plans to resettle 140,000 IDPs in 100 settlements, with the ultimate objective of full restoration by 2040.
