Azerbaijani top official challenges media critics at COP29: Rule of law applies to all
At the COP29 event in Baku, Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Department, addressed a question from a Radio Liberty journalist, drawing attention to the country's commitment to media freedom and the rule of law.
Hajiyev pointed out the presence of Azerbaijani journalists at COP29, highlighting the fact that despite operating under questionable circumstances in Azerbaijan, Radio Liberty’s reporter was also attending the event, Caliber.Az reports citing local media.
"Hundreds of journalists from Azerbaijan are taking part in the COP29 event. At the same time, you as a journalist from Radio Liberty are also participating, despite the fact that you are operating illegally in Azerbaijan. This means that the rule of law, including media freedom, is fully ensured in Azerbaijan," he emphasized.
The presidential aide also addressed concerns regarding the arrests of individuals, stating that any actions taken were unrelated to journalistic activities: “If you are talking about someone's arrest, let's talk about the rule of law. There have been no cases of prosecution of the persons in question in connection with their journalistic activities. We are talking about processes that are related to non-journalistic activities. Being a journalist does not mean being above the law or having privileges outside the law."
Hajiyev then elaborated on the broader issue, noting the involvement of certain media organizations in illegal financial activities: "Institutions calling themselves media bodies, participating in such illegal financial processes, do not realise that they are violating Azerbaijani laws. I regret to note that a number of resources presenting themselves as a media institution, led by Radio Liberty, are engaged in populist propaganda and shows."
Concluding his remarks, Hajiyev issued a reminder of the importance of national pride and the achievements of Azerbaijan. “Therefore, I would advise, if you claim to be a journalist, let's talk about fundamental topics on climate finance. Being a citizen of Azerbaijan and being able to rejoice in the achievements of the country is a good trait."
COP29, a major global climate conference, is underway in Baku, with more than 70,000 participants, including 60,000 international guests and over 3,000 foreign media representatives. This year marks the first time Azerbaijan is hosting COP, a testament to its rising influence on the world stage. Running until November 22, the event brings together leaders from around the world to focus on climate action, with discussions centred on climate finance and sustainable development initiatives, including green energy corridors and clean hydrogen technologies.
