British professor highlights urgency of methane emission reductions in climate change efforts
At the panel session "Progress on Methane: Advancing Global Methane Reduction" impact conference on the margins of the Baku Climate Action Week, Professor Anne Corri from Imperial College London emphasized the critical importance of reducing methane emissions in response to climate change.
According to Corri, approximately 30 per cent of global warming can be attributed to methane emissions, which also significantly contribute to air pollution, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
She stated, “Rapid and sustained reductions in emissions of this gas can be an effective way of preventing temperature rises and improving air quality.”
Her remarks underscore the necessity for immediate action on methane emissions as a key strategy for mitigating climate change and enhancing public health, reinforcing the need for collaborative global efforts in addressing this pressing issue.
The inaugural Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW 2024) got underway on September 30 and will run until October 4. It marks a key point in the climate calendar as the international community prepares for COP29 in Baku in November 2024.
Following the UN General Assembly (10-24/9) and New York Climate Week (22-29/9), Baku Climate Action Week (30/9-4/10) will continue the momentum for the Roadmap to Mission 1.5°C, announced by the Climate COP Presidencies Troika, and support the COP29 Presidency’s 14-point Action Agenda.
With an international perspective and local context, Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW) brings together key stakeholders from policy, private sector, finance, trade and investment, science & academia, cities and regions, arts and culture, civil society, and media as the next step from Bonn, London Climate Action Week, and New York, to build the foundations for a successful COP29.
