“Delighted to welcome Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the Minister of Industry and Advanced Technologies of the United Arab Emirates, to our country. We discussed prospects for joint activities between Azerbaijan and the UAE, enhancing cooperation in the energy sector and our collaboration within COP29,” Jabbarov noted.
The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) will be held in Baku this November, marking a significant moment for Azerbaijan as it takes on the presidency of this pivotal climate conference. The COP, which rotates its presidency among the five recognized UN regions, is expected to draw between 70,000 to 80,000 international guests. Baku Stadium has been selected as the venue for the event, underscoring Azerbaijan's capability to host large-scale international gatherings.
Azerbaijan’s COP29 Presidency aims to foster a process that is transparent, impartial, and inclusive, with a comprehensive plan built on two interlinked pillars to enhance ambition and facilitate action. This approach is designed to effectively address the pressing challenges of climate change.
The decision to host COP29 in Azerbaijan was finalized during the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an agreement established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aimed at preventing dangerous human interference with the climate system. The term COP, or "Conference of the Parties," refers to the highest decision-making body overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC, which consists of 198 member states. COP meetings are held annually unless decided otherwise, with the inaugural COP taking place in Berlin in March 1995, and the secretariat located in Bonn.
