FM: Ankara remains committed to Ukraine peace, upholds Black Sea security
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan affirmed that Ankara will continue its active efforts to mediate a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, while maintaining strict adherence to the Montreux Convention, which regulates maritime navigation in the Black Sea.
“In the foreseeable future, we will continue our effective efforts and mediatory role to ensure peace in Ukraine. At the same time, we will resolutely uphold the Montreux Convention, which forms a cornerstone of the security architecture in the Black Sea,” Fidan stated in parliament during his presentation of the ministry’s budget, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
Fidan underlined that Türkiye’s balanced approach since the onset of the Russia–Ukraine war, coupled with ongoing diplomatic engagement with both Moscow and Kyiv, enabled three rounds of direct negotiations in Istanbul in 2025. These talks have yielded concrete outcomes, including prisoner exchanges.
The minister emphasized that Ankara’s foremost priority remains the peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict through diplomacy and dialogue, reflecting Türkiye’s continued commitment to regional stability and security.
As Turkish Foreign Minister has previously indicated, the prospects for peace negotiations on Ukraine are beginning to take shape, and there remains a distinct possibility that they may be convened on Turkish soil.
