Former UK PM praises Azerbaijan’s COP29 hosting, stressing green energy’s role in global security
Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has lauded Azerbaijan for its successful hosting of the global climate conference COP29, emphasising the critical role of a green energy transition in strengthening energy security.
In a video address at the 12th Global Baku Forum, he acknowledged COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev for his leadership and expressed his gratitude to Azerbaijan for organising an impressive event, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Johnson recalled his tenure as Prime Minister during the UK's chairmanship of COP26 in 2021, when the Glasgow Climate Pact was signed, committing 90% of nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. He also highlighted the significance of other key agreements from COP26, including the global methane pact.
Pointing to substantial progress in reducing CO2 emissions since COP26, Johnson noted that major oil and gas players, such as Azerbaijan’s SOCAR, have been pivotal in these discussions. He stressed that, irrespective of political views or national borders, there are numerous opportunities to cut emissions while boosting job creation and investment.
The former Prime Minister underscored that the green energy transition not only protects the environment but also enhances energy security by shielding consumers from volatile energy prices. He expressed satisfaction with the collaboration between Better Earth, the organisation he leads, and SOCAR, along with other international companies, in advancing emission reduction efforts.
Better Earth is working alongside governments and global businesses to address emission challenges and harness the benefits of cleaner energy. The organisation remains committed to accelerating the adoption of clean fuels and pursuing projects that ensure cleaner air, paving the way for further collaborative solutions worldwide.
