Georgia hosts inauguration of Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway PHOTO
The official inauguration ceremony of the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway is currently taking place at the Akhalkalaki Railway and Logistics Complex in Georgia.
The event has brought together senior representatives from Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye, along with officials from railway and port authorities, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
Under the program, speeches are expected from Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Georgian Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili, Azerbaijani Minister of Digital Development and Transport Rashad Nabiyev, and Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu.
Following the speeches, organisers are set to hold a symbolic commissioning ceremony for the railway, accompanied by a presentation video highlighting the project.
The Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway is a major regional transport initiative jointly developed by Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye. After modernisation works on the Georgian section, the railway’s annual cargo handling capacity increased from 1 million tons to 5 million tons.
Experts say the project’s full-scale operation will strengthen the Middle Corridor, boost freight transportation from China and Central Asia to Europe, and further reinforce the region’s position as an important transit hub.
