Georgian People's Power movement says strategic partnership with US "empty words"

26 February 2024 16:34

The current reality indicates that the US and Georgia may not be strategic partners, given their fundamentally divergent interests, according to the statement of the Georgian public movement People’s People.

The authors of the statement highlight that despite being referred to as the main strategic partner, the United States and Georgia lack a free trade regime, active trade and economic relations, direct flights, and a visa-free regime after all these years, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

"Unfortunately, the 30-year strategic partnership remains just empty words, and behind those words, only naked American interests can be seen," the social movement said in a statement.

There has been almost no investment from the United States in Georgia for 30 years. The authors of the statement noted that 90 per cent of the so-called aid is received through fictitious NGOs by those non-governmental organisations and parties that are attempting to foment polarisation, dismantle state institutions, restore agentocracy and spread pseudo-liberal ideology in Georgia.

"America is not a charitable organisation that unselfishly helps someone and spends money in Georgia to improve the country's economy or something like that. Advancing American interests with American money would not be a problem in itself if the interests of America and Georgia coincided at least on a general level. The main problem is that American interests are fundamentally at odds with our national interests," the statement noted.

The American understanding of strategic partnership is not about close economic cooperation and support, direct flights, visa-free travel and basic adherence to protocol, but about encouraging radicalism and LGBT propaganda in the country, according to the authors of the statement.

"Against the background of all this, we should not only compare the approaches of the Americans and the Chinese but also openly discuss the importance of strategic partnership with the state, which in Georgia is engaged in undermining state institutions and values, constant attempts to organise revolution and LGBT propaganda," the statement noted.

The authors of the statement note that for quite some time now, pseudo-liberal ideology and LGBT propaganda have been gaining strength on an international scale and conquering new heights. And the most complicated thing is that the main source of pseudo-liberal propaganda is official Western structures at the highest level.

"The demonstrative involvement of the US Secretary of State [Antony Blinken] in all this has already removed all questions about where and by whom these processes are managed," the statement noted.

This refers to Blinken's instruction to his staff, according to which US diplomats are not recommended to use the "problematic" words "mother", "father", "husband" and "wife".

"The processes, which, according to tradition, originate in the United States and continue in Europe, will undoubtedly be picked up by the Georgian pseudo-liberal minority, which includes the radical political opposition and the media associated with it," the authors of the statement said.

Representatives of the People's Power and the ruling Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party call Georgia's largest opposition party, United National Movement, a "radical opposition".

As noted in the statement, against this background, the hysteria that Georgian pseudo-liberals have thrown about the chronology of meetings of new Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, who after taking office met first with the Chinese ambassador and then with the US ambassador, becomes even more understandable. Their logic is primitive - the American ambassador should enjoy the absolute privilege of the first meeting, the statement said.

"The fact that the prime minister did not act according to the logic of the pseudo-liberals is something we welcome. However, we believe that this is not enough and we need to deepen the debate on this matter. In particular, we need to ask ourselves whether the US is inherently and substantively a strategic partner of Georgia. We believe that the current reality allows us to draw the opposite conclusion," the statement noted.
