Haber Global marks 34th anniversary of Khojaly genocide with special report Video
Turkish broadcaster Haber Global has aired a special report marking the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide.
The programme included archival video footage and photographs from February 26, 1992, along with details of the events in Khojaly, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
"This was the name of a crime against humanity, a black mark written into history - the Khojaly genocide. It was such a massacre that those who were not killed could not even rejoice in surviving. The torture endured by captives was at a level that would shame even the atrocities recorded throughout history. Many of the survivors, unable to come to terms with what they had experienced, took their own lives. As a result of the genocide, 613 people were killed, including 106 women, 63 children, and 70 elderly people. The fate of 150 people remains unknown," the report described.
The channel also broadcast live from Baku, where its correspondent reported from the Mother’s Cry memorial. Visitors gathered at the site to commemorate the victims of the Khojaly genocide.
According to the live broadcast, those paying tribute included state and government officials, as well as public and political figures. The report said that the pain of the Azerbaijani people remains as fresh as it was 34 years ago and that there continues to be a demand for accountability for those responsible.
It also stated that individuals accused in connection with the genocide have been punished by court decisions, which provides some measure of solace.
"Following the 44-day Patriotic War, Khojaly was liberated from occupation. Reconstruction and restoration efforts are currently underway, and residents have begun returning to their native lands," it said.
