Haber Global prepares report on Karabakh’s Asgaran Fortress, now open for tourists VIDEO
Restoration and reconstruction work continues in Karabakh on historical monuments that suffered severe damage during 30 years of Armenian occupation.
A report by Haber Global highlighted that one of the restored sites is the Asgaran Fortress complex, Caliber.Az reports.
The report noted that Asgaran Fortress, regarded as the eastern gateway to the Karabakh Mountains, was built 274 years ago.
It added that major restoration and reconstruction work has been completed, and the historical monument is now ready to welcome both local and foreign tourists.
Asgaran Fortress stands approximately 14 km from Shusha, strategically located along the road connecting Agdam to Khankendi.
Built between 1748 and 1751 during the reign of Karabakh Khan Panah Ali Khan, it served both defensive and administrative purposes — protecting the khanate’s eastern borders and controlling key trade and military routes through the Karabakh Mountains.
The structure consists of two parallel fortress walls flanking the Qarqar River, fortified with watchtowers and gates designed to resist siege.
Over the centuries, the fortress witnessed several military campaigns, including Russo-Persian conflicts in the 19th century, and sustained damage during the Armenian occupation of the region.
Today, following extensive restoration efforts, Asgaran Fortress stands as a prominent symbol of Karabakh’s architectural and historical heritage.
