Istanbul hosts key talks on Azerbaijan-Georgia-Türkiye-Bulgaria green energy initiative

Discussions on the ambitious green energy corridor project between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Türkiye, and Bulgaria took place in Istanbul this weekend. 

The meeting, which marks a crucial milestone for energy cooperation, was attended by Deputy Energy Minister of Azerbaijan Orkhan Zeynalov, along with representatives from Azerenerji (Azerbaijan's largest electrical power producer) and officials from the energy ministries of the four nations, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

The primary aim of the meeting was to discuss the expansion of green energy initiatives and the potential for renewable energy export.

Zeynalov delivered an update on Azerbaijan’s strategy for energy transition, highlighting the country's renewable energy potential, particularly in wind energy from the Caspian Sea, and efforts to develop green energy zones.

The meeting also focused on the creation of a legal and contractual framework for the proposed green energy transmission corridor. The draft "Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of green energy transmission" was presented, which outlines the framework for enhanced electricity exchange between the participating countries. The document, now agreed upon, is a key step toward making the green energy corridor a reality.

Additionally, a productive meeting took place between Zeynalov and Turkish Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Zafer Demircan. They discussed the ongoing development of a green energy zone in Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

Experts from Azerenerji and the Turkish company TEİAS, along with consultants from BCG, explored the technical and economic feasibility of the infrastructure projects necessary to support green energy export.

The project holds significant promise for strengthening energy ties between Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Georgia, and Bulgaria while advancing the shift toward sustainable energy solutions in the region.
