Media: Ex-Armenian President Kocharyan signals readiness for upcoming elections
Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan has indicated he is prepared to lead the opposition bloc “Armenia” in the upcoming elections.
Speaking to supporters on November 30, he called for intensified grassroots activity to strengthen the party’s presence across the country, Caliber.Az reports per Hraparak.
The details were first published by Graparak, citing an attendee who requested anonymity.
A key topic at the meeting was the future of the third President Serzh Sargsyan, with questions raised about whether he might face legal consequences if Kocharyan were to return to power. Kocharyan reportedly responded succinctly, saying that he had “long closed that chapter.”
Parliamentary elections in Armenia are scheduled for June 7, 2026. In recent weeks, Nikol Pashinyan — leader of the ruling Civil Contract party — has formally submitted his candidacy for the party’s proportional list.
In October, Kocharyan criticised Pashinyan’s chances of re‑election. He declared that Pashinyan has “zero” chance of winning re-election, asserting that the combined support for two political groups would surpass that of Pashinyan’s Civil Contract.
He identified these groups as his own Armenia Alliance and a new party currently being established by Russian–Armenian billionaire Samvel Karapetyan.
Observers say that the 2026 vote will centre less on domestic economic policies and more on broader issues: Armenia’s geopolitical orientation, post‑war stability, and peace negotiations with neighbours.
Public sentiment appears volatile. According to recent polling by the Caucasus Research Resource Centre (CRRC), only about 15% of respondents express trust in Pashinyan.
