Platform for change: Baku to host 15th World Climate Summit

29 October 2024 16:28

Baku is set to host the 15th World Climate Summit on November 17, a major event that coincides with the COP29 conferences and represents the largest business and public sector gathering of its kind.

This summit will provide a platform for sharing best practices across essential sectors that are crucial to decarbonization efforts, including energy, transportation, construction, industry, finance, and environmental sustainability, Caliber.Az reports via local media sources.

The focus of this year’s summit will be to enhance public-private partnerships aimed at realizing the necessary policies, innovations, and investments to meet energy transition goals by 2030, and to pave the way for a zero-emission world with positive environmental impacts by 2050.

As COP29 will serve as a vital link between the outcomes of the COP28 Global Stocktaking in Dubai and the forthcoming revision of climate plans at COP30 in Brazil, it is imperative to bolster financial commitments from both the public and private sectors to accelerate progress.

The summit is expected to draw over 2,000 participants from more than 90 countries, both in person and virtually, including state leaders, CEOs of prominent companies, experts, and activists.

The event will emphasize the urgency of accelerating actions to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and prevent the dire consequences of climate change.

COP29 will take place in Azerbaijan this November, a decision made during the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023.

Baku is expected to welcome between 70,000 and 80,000 international participants throughout the two-week event.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), established during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent harmful human interference with the climate system. The Conference of the Parties (COP), comprising 198 member states, acts as the supreme decision-making body overseeing the UNFCCC’s implementation.

The COP meets annually, with its inaugural session held in Berlin in March 1995, and its secretariat located in Bonn.
