Russian FM: Moscow keeps diplomatic ties with all political forces in Syria
Russia continues to engage with all political entities currently operating in Syria, according to Maria Zakharova, the official spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Zakharova confirmed that Russia’s diplomatic efforts extend to all political forces present in Syria, emphasizing that this was reflected in a recent announcement, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Responding to a question about whether contacts have been established with the country’s new authorities, she clarified: "As you may have noticed, the statement released recently indicates that we maintain communication with all the political forces currently active in Syria."
To recap, after 13 years of brutal civil war, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has fled the country, marking the end of his family's decades-long rule. Rebel forces stormed the capital, Damascus, after a lightning offensive, toppling Assad’s regime with minimal resistance.
The insurgents’ advance, which began on November 27, quickly captured key cities like Aleppo and Hama. Assad's departure is seen as a major victory for those who suffered under his brutal regime, which used chemical weapons and violent repression to maintain power.
While Syrians celebrate the fall of the dictatorship, the future of the country remains uncertain. The rebels are led by factions considered terrorist organizations by the West, and Syria is left deeply scarred after over a decade of war. With no clear governance plan, Syria’s road ahead is fragile, according to experts.
Meanwhile, Syrians abroad, especially in Europe, are celebrating the news with rallies, while many are returning home after years of displacement. Thousands of people have been freed from Assad’s notorious prisons, including the Saydnaya military prison, where thousands were executed.
The world was taken by surprise, as Russia, Assad's ally, is distracted by the war in Ukraine, while Iran and Hezbollah are embroiled in conflict with Israel.
